What are the differences between Construction Engineering and Management (CET) and Construction Technology and Management (CEC) courses in IIT Delhi?

AS
Ashmita Sinha Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Masters from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

The major point of distinction between Construction Engineering and Management (CET) and Construction Technology and Management (CEC) courses at IIT Delhi is that CEC is offered to sponsored candidates whereas CET is offered to students who qualify for GATE in civil engineering with an AIR under 300 for general category.

The students who have completed their graduation in architecture and engineering are sponsored by DMRO to pursue Masters's Diploma in Construction technology and management. Additionally, L&T Constructions also sponsors graduates from Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, and Electrical engineering backgrounds for Masters's Degrees in Construction Technology and Management.

Another distinguishing feature is the risk of placements. Civil Engineering students in general and CEC students specifically face backlash due to the deteriorating situation of the real estate sector and construction industry whereas CET students are sponsored and thus have no risk factor as their employment is guaranteed.

Apart from a few course differences, the two programs and opportunities offered are more or less the same.

The choice of college and branch totally depends on your inclination and career prospects. Yet, a few pointers you might consider

For MBA/ non-core jobs/Startups: IIT Delhi Textile is the best choice if you are looking for any 3 of these options. Its excellent location provides enough exposure to give you access to unimaginable opportunities. Many events hosted by industry experts, CEOs of big companies, and successful entrepreneurs will give a better insight into the startup culture. Moreover, students preparing for competing exams can easily access coaching centers nearby.

Research in Biotechnology: If you are interested in research in general or Biotechnology specifically, then the Biotechnology at KGP is an excellent choice. It is one of the most demanding fields in terms of research and general growth. With a good CGPA, you can find a research internship or you can apply for MS or Ph.D. Even job opportunities are plentiful.

Campus: IIT Delhi is better because of its small size and location

Lastly, Engineering Physics from IIT Guwahati should be considered only if you are genuinely passionate about Physics and want to pursue a research career in the same. The curriculum comprises high-tech mathematical concepts and is a good option to pursue a career in economics and computer science.

The hostel life in Delhi's top colleges such as IIT Delhi, NSIT, and DTU is generally considered to be full of roller coaster experiences. You get to interact with such a mixed crowd for the first time in your life and almost everyone here is a genius.

Your most precious memory when you will leave the college will be munching Maggie at the Maggie Baba around 3 in the morning with your friends or playing cricket at 12 midnight. You will miss the Friday night hangouts in lounges and clubs. Girls however suffer because of the curfew effective right at 9 pm. The hostels add to the overall college life experience and if you aren’t staying at a hostel, you are missing out on a lot of fun.

The primary step even before deciding on the Institute is to determine which field, or branch appeals to you to the extent that you want to spend the rest of your life in that field. Once you have done that, the next step is to research which Institute specializes in that field.

  • For Coding, Computer Science is the best
  • For Automobiles, the Mechanical branch is the best
  • For interest in electronic devices, the best branches for you are ECE and EEE are the best
  • If you are interested in electrical things like motors, and power supply in house EE is the right branch for you.
  • If building dams, bridges, and highways interests you, Civil Engineering is perfect for you

Lastly, I will suggest you go for IIT Delhi without much hesitation as it is a complete package, with the much coveted IIT tag, the best faculties, labs, and other amenities.

How are hostels at IIT Delhi? Are they well maintained?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 11th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi has a total of 13 hostels - 11 for boys and 3 for girls.

In terms of cleanliness, security, network service electricity all the hostels are decent and provide the necessary means for a comfortable stay.

Old hostels: The old hostels lack a few amenities. One big flaw is the lack of lifts despite the hostels having more than 3-4 floors. Moreover, there is only one water filter on the ground floor and it’s a big task for students to come from 3 floors to the ground floor to fill water bottles.

The new hostels have better facilities and even have lifts and water service stationed on every floor. The rooms are also bigger in comparison to the older hostels. Every hostel has night canteens that offer food at subsidiary rates.

Washrooms: The washrooms are cleaned daily and hygiene is maintained. You even have geysers for winter.

Girls' hostels: Everything is very substandard in girls' hostels that are located on a drain because of which a foul smell prevails on the campus throughout the day. The rooms are very few in comparison to the strength and the food served in the mess is pathetic. Availability of rooms is a major problem there and the mess food is pathetic.

IIT Delhi hostels indeed are well maintained but it's important to note that the facilities provided vary from hostel to hostel.

Which is a better choice, engineering physics at IIT Delhi or CS at IIT Ropar? Do E.P. students at IIT Delhi have the opportunity to study CS?

SM
Subhashree Modak Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2020)

I will recommend you opt for Engineering Physics only if

  • You have a great interest in physics and want to conduct research or pursue higher studies in it like a Master, Ph.D., and Postdoc
  • Do you want an IIT tag to target different things like UPSC, Banking, etc

A few points one needs to know regarding Engineering Physics

  • No job opportunities for UG students in the core Physics Department of top Indian government research organizations.
  • Companies like DRDO, ISRO, and BARC offer core jobs to MTech students only
  • The usual trend is to opt for Engineering Physics and then go for Masters and Ph.D.
  • Students of the Engineering physics department can opt for a minor degree from another department like CS by attaining a certain limit of credits. Nevertheless, he will be considered a physics graduate and not CS.

IIT Ropar despite being a new IIT offers decent opportunities in terms of higher studies as well as job opportunities. He can work with top research organizations like ISRO and BARC or even work at reputed firms.

Concludingly, IIT Delhi is a good choice if your primary interest is physics and higher studies. If you are looking for a high-paying CA-related job, then IIT Ropar is for you.

Which college should I prefer for an MBA between IIT KGP VGSOM NMIMS Mumbai IIM Ranchi SP Jain marketing SIBM Pune and IIT Delhi DMS?

AD
Adiksha Das Posted On : March 13th, 2023
Studied at Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi

When choosing your desired colleges, it is recommended to consider the following options in the given order:

  1. SP Jain - Despite the high fee, the maximum salary package offered was INR 52.16 LPA, while the average salary package stood at INR 32.06 LPA during 2022 placements, and the job roles offered are on par with top-tier institutions like FMS or IIM ABC. Missing out on this opportunity would not be wise.
  2. IIM Ranchi/IIT Delhi - If you are an engineer, it is recommended to go for IIT Delhi as the MBA course structure is heavily inclined towards statistics and technology. On the other hand, if you are interested in pursuing a career in HR, IIM Ranchi is the best option due to its reputation for providing excellent HR placements and the prestigious IIM tag.
  3. SIBM Pune - Although not on par with the previously mentioned B Schools, this college is one of the biggest brands you can opt for. The average salary for the 2021-22 batch was INR 23.06 LPA and the job roles offered were on par with the new IIMs. Additionally, you will benefit from a robust alumni network due to the college's age.
  4. NMIMS - While this college is located in Mumbai and might be a good option for students from that area, the high fee can be a concern. However, it is known for its Finance specialization.
  5. IIT KGP - As this college only accepts engineers, the batch will not be diverse, and neither will the job roles offered. Given the other options provided, this college may not be the best choice for you.

It is important to consider each option carefully and choose the one that best fits your needs and career goals. Take your time, do your research, and make an informed decision.

Will a gap of 4 years between a B.Tech and an M.Tech affect placements in IIT Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 10th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

There is no certainty if a gap of 4 years between BTech and MTech will affect placements in any way because it all depends on what you did during the gap. If you were working, then your experience will have neither a positive effect nor a negative effect as the recruiters come with fixed roles and packages and it’s not MBA so the gap does not really matter for them.

Before joining MTech you can analyze what the current job will give you in 2 years in comparison to the MTech degree. Only then make a sound decision. All in all, you will require more than normal efforts to get into MTech.

Some points pertaining to MTech in general and its placements specifically are mentioned below:

  • MTech is a coursework degree rather than a research work-based degree whose purpose is to train engineers for specific tasks instead of research work
  • There are many companies visiting for placements that look for MTech students specifically because of their skills.
  • Many MTech students can be seen getting excellent packages and it’s just a myth that companies prefer BTech over MTech and their job opportunities are scarce.
  • Many big product development companies from across the world like Microsoft India, Deloitte, ABB, and John Deere hire MTech graduates.

To make the most out of your MTech degree, you have to invest maximum effort and then reap the benefits.

Can we complete our MA in English in IIT Delhi or any other IITs? If yes, what is the admission procedure?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 10th, 2023

No, IIT Delhi does not provide MA in English. Some other IITs do provide humanities programs, for instance, IIT Madras offers 5-year integrated MA courses in English as well as in Development Studies. Admission to these courses is done through an entrance test called HSEE.

Other IITs have their own net above tests for the specific humanities programs offered and details can be sought from the official website of respective colleges. Additionally, some IITs also offer Ph.D. programs in different humanities disciplines including English literature.

Should I choose IIT Delhi or IIT Madras for engineering physics?

SD
Souvick Das Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Software Engineer at Microsoft

I can attest to the fact that Engineering Physics at IIT Delhi and IIT Madras is the perfect blend of Physics and Electrical Engineering one could ask for.

You can opt for both physics as well as electrical courses as your electives. Your final year project can be in any one of these departments and you are free to choose provided that there is a good balance between science, mathematics, and engineering.

Most students of Electrical Physics eventually go for Electrical as you design your course instead of getting stuck on a mandatory curriculum.

At IIT Delhi, there is more focus on Physics than Electrical and for those interested in the same, this course is bliss.
