Which is better, a B.Tech in civil engineering from NIT Hamirpur or from PEC Chandigarh?

SV
Shivangi Verma Posted On : May 4th, 2021
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (2019)

My friends have been studying in both NIT Hamirpur and PEC Chandigarh and according to their first-hand experience, PEC Chandigarh holds an edge. Here’s why:

  • It lies in a prime location viz. Chandigarh. The city has better and numerous opportunities. It is an education hub in the North, hence making it easier to plan and implement your higher education goals. There are ample coaching centers as well in case you want to prepare for government exams.
  • PEC has better placement and internship options as well, again it is due to the location advantage.

Which is better - PEC Chandigarh or NIT Agartala?

GU
Gagan Umang Posted On : May 4th, 2021

Although NIT Agarta holds a bigger brand name, it is still a growing NIT. On the other hand, PEC has an older history of about 100 years and continues to flourish.

Here are some insights into the PEC according to my friends who completed their B.Tech from there.

  • Faculty: PEC has some of the best-experienced faculties and many research scholars. On the other hand, NIT struggles to have enough experienced professors as the NIT is newly established.
  • Location: Chandigarh is at advantage any day because of its easy proximity and being an education hub. It is better in terms of facilities and coaching centers too. Whereas, Agartala is at a huge disadvantage due to accessibility and opportunities.
  • Quality of students: You can see a huge difference in the cutoff trend of JEE Mains rank for both the colleges. In the case of NIT Agartala, about 50% of the total seats are reserved for home-state candidates in the range of 90k to 1.5 lakh. Whereas the cutoff trend is much lower at PEC with just over 60 K for branches like metallurgy!
  • Clubs: You can choose over various clubs at PEC Chandigarh. Theseclubs are well renowned and they have even gained respect in IITs during fests and events.

All in all, it is recommended to choose PEC Chandigarh any day over NIT Agartala. PEC definitely belongs to the league with NIT Surat, Allahabad, and others. However, if the NIT tag is all that you are looking for, then go for NIT Agartala.

Which University is better for Engineering: MIT Manipal or PEC Chandigarh?

SV
Shyam Verma Posted On : May 5th, 2021
Computer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Based on what I learned from my friends at these two institutes, I will recommend that you choose MIT Manipal. Many students and faculty in the industry argue that MIT graduates are doing much better than many of their IIT and NIT peers. The reason behind this is the well-rounded personality development you get to experience at MIT Manipal.

  • Campus Life: The campus life is hassle-free, unlike many other private colleges, there are no base-less rules in place. The infrastructure at MIT is great. The sports facilities offered at MARENA Manipal are one of the best in the locality. The hostel and mess facilities offered are quite good too.
  • Coding Culture: The institute has a great coding culture. There are various clubs like ACM Manipal, IECSE, MIST, LUG that helps you develop coding skills. Many coding competitions, hackathons, are organized around the academic year, some of these include Microsoft Code Fun Do, AngelHack, etc. The institute also witnessed the launch of many start-ups.
  • Projects: Various student projects like Parikshit (student satellite team), MRM (Mars Rover Manipal), RoboManipal, AeroMIT, SolarMobil are doing quite well and are considered among the top 5 university team in the world.
  • Placements: The institute is witnessing an upward placement curve with reputed MNCs like Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Dell, Seagate visiting the campus.
  • Higher Studies: You can easily spot MIT alumni pursuing higher studies at reputed universities like MIT Boston, Harvard, UCLA, Stanford, Cornell, etc. Manipal has various coaching centers for GRE/GMAT preparations.
  • Alumni: The institute boasts of successful alumni. Satya Nadella, Rajeev Suri are some of the names worth mentioning.
  • Branch Strength: The total branch strength of the first year for MIT is around 2000. The compact branch size is another plus point for MIT.
  • No Management Quota: Another important aspect that makes MIT stand out among other institutes is the lack of management quota. 95% of the admission at MIT is done based on merit and the other 5% is through the NRI quota. So, you will have a better peer group.

Going by the above factors it is safe to say that MIT Manipal is a great choice for an engineering degree.

Is YMCA UST better than PEC Chandigarh?

VG
Vaibhav Goyal Posted On : September 19th, 2022
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering & Automobile Engineering, YMCA University of Science and Technology

No, PEC Chandigarh is way ahead of YMCA UST. PEC has a higher cutoff, hence a better student crowd. It also has a smaller batch size, so every student gets the required attention. PEC Chandigarh placements are better. The average and highest CTC for the institute are INR 10.83 LPA and INR 42 LPA, respectively.

Situated in Chandigarh, PEC also has a locational advantage. You will receive better exposure.

How is it possible that Chandigarh University students are getting higher or equal packages to PEC or UIET despite having such a low cut-off when compared to PEC?

AS
Abhay Sukla Posted On : May 5th, 2021
PEC Chandigarh

The package acquisition is not a college deed in the case of Chandigarh University. There are many factors that you need to consider whenever you want to compare placements in colleges.

UIET/PEC:

  • Both these are government colleges. UIET, being a new one is still rising and working. It has strict admission rules and academic procedures that follow AICTE’s rules.
  • It has an average of 100-120 students in every branch. The number of students is a bit lower in branches like Meta or BioT. So, you will see around 600 students in a batch of 20xx.
  • There’s no way anyone can get admission without clearing the counseling. There are no management seats and hence no pay to study. We should also note that UIET has no Home Quota.
  • This makes the admission more open to deserving candidates. Almost 80% of the present batch doesn’t belong to Chandigarh or places around.

CU or any other similar private college:

  • It might sound lucrative but the reality is that they don’t have any seat matrix. You can even check on a verified website, ask students and do your own research.
  • You will find that CU gives admission to N number of students where N is the number of students who can afford it.
  • The year 2018-19 saw 2000 Engineering students getting admission but the batch of 2020 had 2600 students in CSE with just 60 students in Electrical.

Placements:

  • UIET/ PEC: There are almost 70-90% placements in different branches. These numbers are now going down very drastically not because of the companies which offer placements, but because many students don’t want placements. UIET has funded more than 8 startups out of the college in the past 4 years. PEC also has a significantly greater number of placements. 20+ elite companies and other 50+ local startups visit both these colleges, along with few mass recruiters.
  • CU: Tough they claim huge campus placements, which is true, they have never displayed or claimed the people placed or even their exact placement statistics. CU holds 3-4 pool placements where anyone, even the ones outside the campus, can come for placements and if they get placed, they are said to be placed from CU. Moreover, the genuine placements are divided among engineering and MBA students. UIET doesn’t have MBA. CU hasn’t shared the average placement records either. They would probably be very low, seeing their records, maybe around 2-3L, but definitely not more than that.

Now that you know all the facts, you must also know that a college hardly matters. What matters the most is what you wish to make of yourself. You can get a 20-40L package from CU/UIET/PEC if you want to work for it. You can even become an entrepreneur.

What should be preferred, CS at Thapar Patiala or Electrical Engineering at PEC Chandigarh?

SC
Sakshi Chaudhary Posted On : July 19th, 2021
Studied at PEC Chandigarh (2019)

As these are two distinct branches of engineering, you should pursue a topic that piques your interest.

  • CS is primarily concerned with software, whereas EE is more concerned with hardware.
  • Fees may be high, but consider it an investment because if you learn and perform well, your first year's salary will pay for four years of education and beyond.
  • However, listen to your heart and natural instincts.
  • A CS graduate has more demand than an Electrical graduate. This is due to the rapid and constant growth of the corporate world.
  • Electrical Engineering students can also sit for placements of both core and IT firms.
Categories CS at Thapar Patiala Electrical at PEC Chandigarh
Course Fee 13.23 lakh 6.39 lakh
Highest CTC 20 LPA 8-10 LPA
Average CTC 11 LPA 6 LPA
Recruiting Companies Wipro, Infosys, TCS, IBM, etc. Phillips, L&T, JP Morgan, TCS, etc.

It all depends on what you're interested in. If you are interested in CS, then choose Thapar (if fees are not an issue) or electrical in PEC Chandigarh.
