The scope for transportation engineers in India is significant as with the developing economy, India is in need of advanced traffic networks, pavement constructions, smooth traffic flow structure and R&D consultants.
First of all, it depends on your interest whether you want to pursue engineering in Mechanical or Civil, and only then you can decide the better college. As the engineering branches are different it’s difficult to pick one college over the other.
Comparing the two courses in terms of placements offered last year, we see 83% of the Mechanical branch students got placed in IIT Bhubaneswar with average CTC 11.4 LPA. 77% of the Civil students in IITG got placed last year. The average package offered in IIT Guwahati was around 11 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA.
Being the older IIT, the infrastructure of IITG is good and the placements for both the core as well as the non-core sectors are also quite good. IIT Bhubaneswar has been showing good numbers in recent years and is developing gradually.
You can also look for some other options for mechanical other than IIT Bhubaneswar. If you manage to get a good score in Mains, you can look for admission in old NIT where you will get better future opportunities also good placement packages. While IIT Guwahati being an older institute is expected to attract many of the major recruiters from all the sectors and provide good CTC.
So, choose the college based on your branch of interest.

Four years of Electrical at IIT Bhubaneswar is better than Four years of ECE at BITS Goa.
I am a second year B.Tech EE student at IIT Bhubaneswar. EE and Biotech are both very different choices, but to make the decision easier for you, I am highlighting a few points about my college/branch-
IIT Bhubaneswar has a more modern infrastructure than IIT Delhi, as it is newly constructed.
IIT Bhubaneswar offers decent placements, and the EE faculty is qualified and experienced. The campus is away from the hustle and bustle of the city as it is located outside of Bhubaneswar.
Here are the placement details for B.Tech EE at IIT Bhubaneswar:
Particulars | B.Tech EE at IIT Bhubaneswar (2023) | B.Tech Biotech at IIT Delhi (2023) |
---|---|---|
Average Salary | INR 19.05 LPA | - |
Highest Salary | INR 44.62 LPA | - |
Median Salary | INR 15 LPA | INR 20.50 LPA |

If you are interested in EE, you must opt for IIT Bhubaneswar. Even though IIT Bhubaneswar is not as highly ranked as IIT Delhi, it will offer you good academics and placements in this field.
IIT Bhubaneswar is a better choice for EEE than IIT Indore or IIt Dhanbad.
I don’t have much idea about IT at IIT Allahabad or electrical engineering at ISM Dhanbad, however being a student of Civil Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar, I can surely help you with some insights.
NIT Rourkela is better for a Masters in Geology. It offers better facilities. Geology department has well-equipped labs with latest technologies. The campus has an active research environment. There is cutting-edge ongoing research in the field of Earth and Atmospheric Science.
Although NIT Rourkela is the better option in terms of academics and research culture, IIT Bhubaneswar has a locational advantage. Due to this advantage, it's easier to get projects and placement opportunities.
No, IIT Bhubaneswar doesn’t offer minor degrees in any branch along with the major degree. IITs in India typically offer three degree programs, i.e. B.Tech, M.Tech, and dual degrees. Few IITs also offer B.Arch and M.Arch programs as well.
But IIT Bhubaneswar allows students to take subjects within or outside of their disciplines to earn additional credits.
I am a B.Tech CSE student at IIT Bhubaneswar. Our institution is ranked 47 in the NIRF 2023 Engineering Ranking.
Other than that, IIT Bhubaneswar has various clubs and societies which allow students explore areas like robotics, web design and programming. These clubs and societies are- Robotics and Intelligent Systems Club (RISC), Web and Design Society (WebnD), and Neuromancers (The Programming Society).
Here is the NIRF 2024 Engineering Ranking, and average package offered to CSE students at these various IITs:
IIT Name | NIRF 2024 Engineering Ranking | Average package for B.Tech CSE |
---|---|---|
IIT Gandhinagar | 8 | INR 29.29 LPA |
IIT Ropar | 9 | INR 28.72 LPA |
IIT Patna | 10 | INR 35.57 LPA |
IIT Indore | 16 | INR 30.32 LPA |
IIT Bhubaneswar | 26 | INR 25.18 LPA |
Even though IIT Bhubaneswar ranks the lowest in both these parameters, it is a good enough choice for B.Tech CSE. It offers good clubs & societies, decent placements, and an IIT tag like the others.
