IIIT Hyderabad: what are some of the pros and cons about the on campus hostel... And what's the curfew?

AG

IIIT Hyderabad hostels are considered decent with all the basic amenities one could ask for. Here are a few pros and cons of these hostels

Pros

  • The best part about these hostels is the ‘no curfew’ rule allowing you to come and go as your will.
  • The hostels are newer than that of old IITs and NITs so obviously are better designed and furnished.
  • IIIT Hyderabad does not have a huge campus like IITs so the distance between the campus and hostels is less saving both time and money for the students.
  • The mess is located inside the hostel and serves decent food.

Cons

  • The hostel administration is quite careless and does not pay heed to the students' complaints. But this citation is somewhat similar in all colleges these days.
  • The roofs of the hostel buildings are locked. Then again, this is a safety precaution.

Overall, IIIT Hyderabad hostel life is filled with a lot of freedom and comfort.

How strict is attendance policy at IIIT Hyderabad?

SG
Shubham Gaur Posted On : August 2nd, 2023
CS undergrad, IIIT Hyderabad

The attendance policy at IIIT Hyderabad is pretty strict indeed. The institute has a 100% attendance policy in all courses. Whether this includes lab sessions and tutorials is decided by the concerned faculty. The minimum attendance required is >= 85%. The penalties for breaking the attendance rules are as follows.

  • 75% to 85%: Grade is reduced by 1
  • 65% to 75%: Grade is reduced by 2.
  • 0% to 65%: Grade is changed to ‘F’ which is Fail.

It’s important to note that IIIT Hyderabad being a private institute has strict attendance rules not just for the sake of it. The matter is taken seriously and proxy attendance for friends is impossible here. Students get a grade drop even if they skip

You can also opt for the RSAO or the  Responsible Student Attendance Option. Through this you are free from attendance compulsion provided that you get a grade above ‘B’.

Why are good institutes like IIIT-Hyderabad, IIIT-Allahabad, BITS-Pilani, NSIT and DTU missing in MHRD Rankings for best engineering institutes?

AB

The first-ever ranking of higher education institutions in India namely the Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, and Universities was released on the 4th of April 2016, by the MHRD. Many claimed that the report was misleading as they did not conduct thorough research before ranking the institutes.

Firstly, only 233 out of 720 universities participated and it's highly possible that some of the major colleges did not participate in the survey. So to get an exact picture, 100% participation is a must. One of my friends told me that his institute was a tier-3 institute with pathetic teaching faculty and placements and yet was ranked under 70. This alone is enough to point out that fallacy in the rankings. He also told me that most of the duvet conducted was done with false credentials, therefore, discrediting the rankings.
The worst part of these MHRD rankings is that the accuracy and authenticity are in the hands of the institute which can be easily manipulated. Overall I believe that The National Institutional Ranking Framework is a good idea, but poorly executed because the rankings are done on the basis of incomplete data and are often manipulated. Unfortunately, many students fall trapped in these inflated rankings and end up h choosing the wrong institute.

It depends on the specific IIT in question. IITs certainly offer excellent CSE programs. But IIIT Hyderabad is nowhere behind. It follows a curriculum that is regularly updated according to industry trends. It has one of the best coding cultures in the country.

IIIT Hyderabad placements 2021 show the highest CTC to be INR 56 LPA. While the lowest CTC offered was INR 2 LPA.

Should I apply for the 2nd round with a percentile of 99.233rd at IIIT Hyderabad?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : August 1st, 2023

No, I don’t think it’s wise to apply for the 2nd round with a percentile of 99.233rd at IIIT Hyderabad. Based on the cutoffs, the minimum percentile required to get IIIT Hyderabad CSE is 99.78 whereas for ECE is 98.87. Even if you end up getting ECE in the subsequent rounds you will end up losing a lot of money. Moreover, paying a sum of 20k just for a single round is not justified especially when your chances are slim.

Additionally, only half of the fee is considered an advance tuition fee. So you will lose a lot of money whether you get admission or not. It’s better to try another IIIT or a NIT than IIIT Hyderabad. But if you are adamant, you can surely try your luck!

Which one is better IIITH or IIT Guwahati?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

IIIT's curriculum is similar to IIT after which it has been designed. Under this curriculum, you have to complete all compulsory CS courses within 2 years and then you are open to explore a field of your choice through electives in the 3rd and 4th year. A few common electives include VISION, NLP, CSTAR, and many others. Some students use their free time to prepare for their Master, publish undergrad papers, and then move abroad for Masters. Others can be seen targeting an MBA. Consider the following things before making the final decision

  • Placement trends over the past few years
  • Curriculum especially the compulsory courses
  • Number of research papers from undergrads
  • Fee structure
  • Campus Culture

Overall, IIIT Hyderabad is an excellent choice considering its rich research culture in comparison to IIT Guwahati.

We interact with more than 100 people daily so you cannot expect everyone to be aware of IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Allahabad. Moreover, you should stop valuing people's opinions on these aspects of life. You alone are responsible for your life and career.
