Madras School of Economics to Start BA in Economics from Academic Year 2022-23; Check Details Here


Madras School of Economics (MSE) Chennai has planned to start an undergraduate program in Economics from the next academic year 2022-23, with a total of 50 seats. 

As per the latest updates from Madras School of Economics, MSE Chennai, pass-out students of class 12th willing to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Economics can apply for the BA in Economics degree programme.

Out of the total seats, the institute has announced to reserve 35% of them for the students from Tamil Nadu. However, the remaining 65% of seats can also be filled by the students of other Indian states including Tamil Nadu. 

When it comes to placements, Madras School of Economics stands next to Delhi School of Economics, boasting 100% placement records for its postgraduate degree courses where the students receive an average salary of INR 12 lakh per annum.

MSE BA in Economics: Mathematics Students to be Preferred for Admission

Speaking about the introduction of a new degree programme, R Shanmugam, Director, Madras School of Economics, said that BA in Economics will consist of quantitative components. As a result, students who have studied Mathematics in Higher Secondary will be preferred for the degree course in Economics. 

At present, Madras School of Economics courses include PGDM, MA, Ph.D, Integrated MA, PG Diploma programs. Further, the institute will soon spread the introduction of the new degree course in Economics amongst the school students in the city, he said. 

Meanwhile, students intending to pursue the BA in Economics degree programme will have to appear for an entrance exam scheduled to be conducted in June 2022. 

Also, the Madras school of Economics has planned to permit the students to study on a five-year integrated course. 

Shanmugam said that students pursuing the BA in Economics degree programme will easily gain admission for masters or PhD programmes in foreign universities because the institute is planning for a similar approach. 

The course curriculum, syllabus, various options for the students, entrance exam details, will be discussed and finalized during the academic council meeting in February 2022, he said. Further, the institute has decided to award its own degree for the undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD courses. 

Earlier, Tamil Nadu identified Madras school of Economics as an institute of special importance in Economics and allied subjects and Management with degree granting powers via Madras School of Economics Act 2020.

Until now, the institute offered its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes jointly with the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) in Tiruvarur.
