The Education Minister issued the decision when it was discovered that some universities were de-reserving vacant General-EWS and OBC seats during the admissions period.

According to reports, the education minister has directed all institutions across the nation to rigorously adhere to the reservation policy. The education minister has requested a compliance report from the colleges as soon as possible.

The Education Minister has also urged universities to lower the cutoffs for the reserved category if necessary and to allow them an extra year to complete their studies.

A senior official of the education ministry said, “It has come to the notice of the ministry that some central educational institutions or agencies have been carrying out de-reservation of unfilled General-EWS and OBC (non-creamy layer) seats by transferring them to the open or general category during admissions. We have also received a number of verbal and written intimations of such practices in recent times.”

According to the official, the education minister has asked all central universities, including IITs and NITs, to immediately halt de-reservation and to observe the necessary reservation-related regulations in accordance with the terms.

The education minister has also directed institutions to ensure that all reserved-category seats are filled. He also requested that they give underprivileged kids coaching and the second year of study if necessary, as well as assistance with exams, counselling, and admissions.
