New Delhi: IIT Madras' National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), has collaborated with Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) to offer a remediation programme for children with dyslexia studying in Tamil medium.

IIT Madras to Offer a Free Tamil Online Remediation Programme Available Through NPTEL

The remediation programme of IIT Madras is being offered in online mode, completely free of charge through the NPTEL portal.

The children with dyslexia studying in Tamil receive remedial instruction through a collaboration between the Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), an initiative of IIT Madras.

The curriculum is being provided in an online format absolutely free of charge through the NPTEL portal.

MDA has devised and developed "Tamil Vazhi Payirchi," a comprehensive programme to meet these kids' rehabilitation needs and in order to allow the identification and intervention for children with dyslexia studying in Tamil-medium primary schools.

It consists of a screening tool that can be administered in a primary Tamil-language class, a kit for remediation, and a training programme that equips the teachers with the skills they need to help dyslexic students.

A personalised education plan serves as the direction for the structured, multimodal approach known as remedial instruction. The plan makes use of the child's strengths to provide solutions for coping with the requirements and obstacles.

The remedial teaching at Madras Dyslexia Association is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach and smoothly integrates it with the Multiple Intelligences method.

V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, and Mr. D. Chandrasekhar, President, Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA), launched the ‘Tamil Vazhi Payirchi’ programme in the presence of Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, Andrew Thangaraj, Co-ordinator, NPTEL-IIT Madras, Bhaskar Ramamurthi and R. Nagarajan and other stakeholders.

Speaking on the occasion, V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said that the institute is providing technical support through NPTEL but also through its alumni, D. Chandrasekhar, who is spearheading this initiative.

The initiative should also be made available in multiple languages with the help of AI/ML-based systems like those developed by ‘AI4Bharat,’ he said.

Pointing out the impact of ‘Tamil Vazhi Payirchi,’ D. Chandrasekhar, President, Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA), said that around 10 to 15% of the children are impacted by dyslexia statistically, which implies that a large number of children could need screening, assessment, and follow-up remedial support in Tamil medium schools.

He concluded by saying that the new program will pave the way for early identification and intervention in such schools, across Tamil Nadu.
