IIT Gandhinagar, Ministry of Culture to Host International Colloquium on Harappan Civilisation

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Gandhinagar and the Ministry of Culture are set to host the international colloquium on Harappan Civilisation from February 10 to 12, 2023.

IIT Gandhinagar and the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, are organizing this three-day International Colloquium on “Emerging Perspectives of Harappan Civilisation” from February 10 to 12. 

In the presence of Govind Mohan, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, GoI, the chief guest; Dr Alok Tripathi, Additional Director General, ASI; and Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, the inauguration will be held on February 10, 2023, at 10 am. 

This will be followed by a keynote address by Prof Ajithprasad, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, and a scholar of archaeology, on the topic ‘Harappan Civilisation: Perspectives from Gujarat’

The three-day international colloquium will mainly focus on important topics like the genesis, its material culture, the climatic scenario, and theoretical views of the protohistoric age. 

As part of the event, the institute will establish the "Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Archaeology Chair" to encourage and support archaeological scientific research.

More than 65 archaeologists, scientists, and research scholars from India and abroad will participate in the three-day colloquium, which is scheduled to be held in hybrid mode. 

During various thematic sessions, they will speak and present their research on the Harappan Civilization. 

The sessions cover topics like terminology, the origins of the Indus and Indus-Saraswati Civilizations, state and polity during the Harappan Civilization, trade contacts with other areas, technology during the Harappan Civilization, climate and environmental studies, bio-archaeological perspectives (floral, faunal, and other related studies), bio-anthropological or DNA studies, and the make-up of the Harappan population.

Some of the sessions planned for the three day event are the Indus script: inputs from archaeology and statistical studies; de-urbanisation processes of the Harappan Civilisation; Harappan Civilisation vs Vedic Culture: possible points of contact/ transmission. 

Objectives of the IIT Gandhinagar, Ministry of Culture International Colloquium: 

  • Bring together the academic community working on those topics;
  • Think about the many facets and unanswered questions of this civilisation;
  • Get an agreement on terminology that is appropriate in this situation;
  • Encourage further fieldwork and research collaborations; suggest establishing a national centre for Harappan studies; 
  • With the assistance of the Indian government, bring together various state governments and research organisations to develop a structure for the protection and preservation of this extensive cultural legacy.
