A team of researchers at IIT Bombay and Shiv Nadar University claims to have developed a technology to produce environment-friendly Lithium-Sulphur batteries that will be three times more energy-efficient and cost-effective than the ones currently available.
According to the researchers from IIT Bombay and Shiv Nadar University, the Li-S battery technology is based on the principles of green chemistry, inculcating the use of by-products from the petroleum industry such as Sulphur, agro-waste elements and co-polymers such as cardanol, and eugenol as cathodic materials.

The researchers said that the technology has the potential to assist multi-billion dollar industries such as tech gadgets, drones and electric vehicles (EVs). The research focuses on finding a solution that meets the requirements of the industry, while at the same time remaining environment-friendly.
An associate professor at Shiv Nadar University said, “The capability of three times more energy density, coupled with being a significantly safer technology, holds the promise of accelerating the adoption of clean, battery-led energy across multiple domains.

“For example, an electric car with a 400 km range using conventional Lithium-ion batteries can now quadruple its range to 1,600 km with this technology… it could mean driving from Delhi to Mumbai on a single charge and still being left with power.”
The new battery technology synthesizes a bio-based molecule, capable of production on a commercial scale. The research includes a new type of cathode for Li-S, which can help uplift the battery technology to provide even better performance.
