Mr. Sandip Das is currently serving as CEO of IHRM College of Management Studies (IHRM), Kolkata. A man with great capabilities and versatility in the way he manages different fields. He has been a member of various important Committees of West Bengal like Inspection team, Syllabus Committee (West Bengal State Council), Examiner for West Bengal University of Technology, Convenor of college disciplinary committee and many more.

Besides handling his role as CEO of IHRM, Mr. Das is also an assessor for the Ministry of Labour Govt. of India, for Modular Employable Skills Development Program since 2009.

In a conversation with Noor Mohammad, Mr. Das expressed his views about the current education scenario and how his Institute IHRM is fulfilling the dreams of many youths.


My students' success is what I pray for in return for my hard work as a teacher

The thing that all the teachers in the world enjoy is the success of their students. Imagine a student of yours comes to you after ten years and says “sir, because of you I am successful today”. This feeling is inexpressible in words. It is the most significant acknowledgement you can receive as a teacher. The teaching industry requires you to be sincere, loyal and honest towards not only your students but also towards your profession.

Leadership is of the people, by the people, and for the people.

A good leader requires to communicate with his team. I leave no stone unturned when it comes to maintaining healthy communication with my team. There are no parts of the institute building that I do not visit, and there are no employees that I do not talk to. This ensures the employees that their leader is standing with them and is ready to listen to their problems. 


My leadership style is participative

My philosophy is to take the Institute forward and do whatever is right for the Institute. I want to utilize my position to bring improvements in the institute where ever it is needed and in whatever way I can. I am a participative leader. I think being a participative leader helps in making decisions that are in favour of the institute but also ensure implementation of those decisions.

Our Remote location is one of the challenges we face

The main challenge that we face is the location. Our college is located a bit far away from the city area. Although the location has been a challenge for us, I believe since we have quality staff and teaching faculty, getting students to our institute has not been a problem for us. I believe that “Motivation needs to come from inside and perseverance in your efforts is required until you achieve your success and even after that.” That is what we did. Now, we are near to achieving our goals and creating new goals.


Our curriculum is industry-driven and fills the gap in professional studies

Along with the university course, we also have some short term additional value-added programs. In hotel management, we give some cruise line management, in BBA, we give digital marketing, real estate management, and in BCA, we offer a course on data analytics, big data handling. This makes the student industry-ready and employable.

Learning is a two-way process benefitting both students and teachers

Students need to be empowered. College students are adult learners, and we should differentiate them from school students. For any institute, a mutual exchange of thoughts and ideas must take place. This does not only provide the student to open up to different thought processes but for the teachers, it can be a new lesson learned. For the growth of the students, we need to include them in the learning processes.

We make every effort to get our students placed in big companies

Placement opportunities are plenty in the hospitality industry, and we have tied up with leading hotels. There are almost 100% placement records in hospitality courses. However, the concern is for BBA and BCA students, the industry scenario in West Bengal at the moment is not very bright, but still, we try and place our students in different areas.
