Ar. Aashima Arora is currently working as Assistant Professor at CODE, Vivekanand Global University (VGU), Jaipur. She has 5+ years of industry experience of working on various reputed urban development projects like Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, etc. as an Urban Designer and working with private clients on several architectural projects. Along with having 1.5 years of experience as an educator in the field of Architecture and Planning, she is an academic leader and philosopher.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Establishing a keen learning environment”

As a faculty of architecture, my prime role is to ensure my mode of teaching is both theory as well as application based. Creating an inclusive learning environment within the classroom by knowing my students well, understanding their intellect and modifying my teaching methods accordingly is also my major responsibility as an educator. I try to offer my students best practices in learning so that they can gain maximum. 

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the fellow faculty?

“Communicating and conversing in a healthy way”

Developing respectful, positive relationships with fellow faculty members goes a long way in establishing a healthy environment within the workplace for me. It is always helpful to know about their interests and talk to them about it on a regular basis. Being friendly and helpful works well, but what is equally important is to define your boundaries and respect others’ boundaries as well. 

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Scheduling industrial pedagogy with updated curriculum”

Architecture being an application based field, demands a pedagogy which ensures a balance between theory and practical knowledge. Planning field trips, site visits, market visits etc. on a regular basis is essential for students studying architecture. Planning in order to ensure holistic, application based learning along with high standards in terms of quality of education; curriculum is kept up to date with the market trends.

How do you strategize the curriculum to make it befitting for the students? 

“On time upgradation and evaluation with industry professionals”

The curriculum is planned, and frequently updated, after thorough discussions with various industry experts. Changing industry trends and hiring practices are kept in mind while updating the curriculum, to ensure the courses remain extremely relevant with the current market trends. The students acquire the required skills which are in accordance with the existing market demands through internships and training sessions being inculcated in course structure beyond regular classroom learning. 

How does your department prepare students for higher education?

“Learning from specialized expertise and fostering multiple skills”

CODE VGU has earned a reputed name in the industry, despite of being a young department. Our students greatly benefit from our highly experienced faculties and from our ties with the industry professionals, in terms of placement as well as guidance regarding higher studies. Special emphasis is given to present students with right opportunities for nurturing their skills, by promoting multi disciplinary learning, encouraging participation in design competitions, hands-on activities, etc to enhance their overall portfolio for better job and higher studies prospects.

How does your department help students to cope up with the competitive world?

“Engaging them in challenging activities and developing skills”

We encourage our students to learn beyond the classrooms, by involving them in various practical learning exercises. We focus on teaching them skills of collaboration, tolerance, communication and problem solving by finding creative solutions to emerging challenges. We have a dedicated internship cell which ensures that the students are given opportunities to work on real projects, under supervision of faculty members. The knowledge gained by working on real projects - real challenges, real clients and real deadlines – prepares the students for the challenges ahead.
