MDI Murshidabad observed the second edition of their annual media conclave, Samvaad

Date: February 12, 2021

This year, Samvaad had to be conducted on an online platform, as educational institutes continue to remain shut due to the ongoing pandemic. Inspired by the virtual platform utilized for the event, Samvaad was renamed as 'e-Samvaad' to symbolize the change.  The flagship event inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Atmanand, Director - MDI Murshidabad and Director - (Additional Charge) MDI Gurgaon consisted of a panel discussion, Discourse: The internet has become a giant advertising billboard that is suffocating its users.

The discussion saw participation from some of the most notable personalities in the field of Marketing, Advertisement, and Public relations. 'e-Samvaad' served as a platform for deliberation on the various challenges and opportunities that exist in the world of digital marketing and digital advertising.

"We have covered decades in days", quoted Mr. Samir Kapur, Director, Ad factors PR (India’s largest PR company, highlighting the exponential growth in the world of digital marketing and advertising. He elucidated how COVID 19 acted as a catalyst in shifting consumer mind-set and consumer behaviour in favour of digital, which resulted in marketers being incentivized to cash in on this opportunity.

On the other hand, Mr. Manu Malhotra, Manager - EMEA Advertising Cloud services, Adobe, had a different perspective to share. Mr. Manu spoke about the endless possibilities that have emerged due to the enormous amounts of data available to marketers today. He emphasized that data enables marketers to ensure that their campaigns don't suffocate users. He also touched upon the amount of freedom and empowerment that users have today considering ad-free subscription models, ad blockers, etc.

Dr. Anvitha Prabhakara - Vice President- Marketing, Strategy & Business Growth Consulting, Ex- Aditya Birla, Castrol India & Zee Networks, enlightened the audience about how pandemic has made a digital or online presence for businesses a no brainer. She explained that while the importance of digital advertising channels is on the rise, the traditional mediums of marketing remain equally relevant. She highlighted that marketers should be cognizant of the end goal while undertaking any promotional activity. The media mix should be decided based on the specific goals of each campaign. She also stated that brands and marketers should step up to ensure that their campaigns are enabling and not suffocating.

Mr. Bhaskar Mujumdar - Corporate Affairs, Communication, and Digital, Egis India, explained how instant response and feedback are a big part of the reason behind the rapid adoption of digital advertising platforms. He voiced his concern about the lack of concrete ROI measures in digital advertising platforms. He also touched upon the necessity for regulators to step in and resolve the issues around data privacy and user tracking.

While the day started with knowledge sharing and insightful discussions, things took a rather funny turn when Mr. Kumar Varun graced the stage of e-Samvaad. Known for his witty one-liners and punches, Mr. Kumar Varun ensured that he delivered what he is known for, bringing smiles to everyone's faces. Sharing anecdotes from his FMS days, Mr. Kumar Varun did a one-hour interactive session with the students and ensured that the event ended with everyone sporting a wide grin.

e-Samvaad was organized with a vision to provide a stage for deliberation among the students and various industry stalwarts. Given the engaging discussion that took place among the panellists, and the energetic participation displayed by the students, one can easily conclude that the event's goal was thoroughly realized.
