Mr. Rajesh Singh is the Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at RTC Institute of Technology. He is pursuing Ph.D. in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. He has more than 16 years of experience in teaching and industries. He is awarded as one of the best SPOCs by IIT Madras for NPTEL. His areas of interest are Computer Networks, Machine Learning and the Theory of Automation.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

"To maintain a good ambiance for their growth and development"

Being the Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, my prime responsibilities are as follows:

  • To provide a healthy environment for the overall growth of students.
  • Be prompt in solving the queries and problems of students.
  • Make students ready for industries by imparting quality education and training.

How do you bring in a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?

"By providing their training programs in latest technologies"

To enforce a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects, we provide training on the latest technology by industry people to our students and motivate them to participate in events like hackathons which are organized by MHRD, IT companies like Smart India Hackathon and Codevita, etc.

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By being transparent and frank while I communicate with them"

When it comes to maintaining a cordial relationship with my students and fellow faculty then I am always open to any advice or criticism which comes from their end. Because I believe that the main key to unlocking students' potential is by developing positive and respectful relationships with them from the beginning.

Which best practices are being offered by the department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"We offer every kind of help at every stage be it training or inclusion of new programs in the curriculum"

The curricula of our institute contain programs that have been designed to cater ever-changing demands of the IT industry. Because our main focus is to provide a holistic learning ambiance to our students and empower them to make significant contributions at all levels. Moreover, the Department has a local chapter of NPTEL with IIT Kharagpur which gives a platform for our students to learn and enhance their knowledge with IIT professors. Lastly, our department has also signed an MOU with TCS and other IT companies for the training of our students.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"By adding new courses in curriculum and taking feedback from industry experts"

We do have a committee in our department that review the curriculum from time to time to meet the current needs of the industry. And apart from this, we also take feedback from Industry personnel, Academicians, Alumni and our students while drafting and updating our curriculum.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and placements?

"By conducting activities like mock interviews, training and workshops"

Our Department has a Training and Placement cell which gives enough opportunities to our students to secure a good job in reputed organizations and also guides them for higher education. And to make our student's future and industry-ready we organize training, mock interviews and workshops. Lastly, we provide special support to students who want to prepare for the GATE exam. 

How do you prepare your students to cope with this competitive world?

"To strengthen their skills, we have made internship mandatory for them"

We have made it mandatory for all our students to do internships every semester. And we also encourage them to participate in different coding hackathons so that they can enhance their coding skills and use their existing knowledge to solve problems.

What extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of the students?

"Activities like seminars and guest lectures are organized by us"

Apart from providing the best quality education to our students, our objective is to strengthen their physical and mental strength. Hence we conduct various kinds of co-curricular activities like workshops, webinars, seminars on the latest technology like python, machine learning and cyber security, etc. We also encourage them to participate in NSS, NCC, Techfest and annual sports.

Which challenges did you face while uplifting the education quality of your department?

"Preparing students in skills which are in demand in the industry"

There are actually a few issues which we are facing to uplift the education quality of our department. And developing the basic skills of problem-solving and critical thinking in students are the main ones. 

How does your department enhance the skills of the faculty and prepare them as per industry standards?

"By organizing required conference and FDPs for them"

Our department organizes FDP (Faculty Development Programme) to upgrade our faculty on the latest technologies and also motivate them to enroll in MOOCs courses and attend conferences.

What are the approaches you bring in apart from the curriculum to teach your students?

"We have a dedicated academy, MOOCS programs and guest sessions for them"

Apart from the curriculum, our department has oracle academy and NPTEL MOOCs courses to train our students for industry. We also conduct guest lectures by the professors of BIT Mesra, IIT Dhanbad, etc. on the latest technology to train them for industry requirements.

What do you see as the greatest strengths of your department and how can they be enhanced?

"Our highly qualified faculty and latest technical infrastructure"

Our Department has experienced faculty having more than 15 years of teaching experience. And we also have 8 computer labs with more than 500 computers with the latest software. Lastly, we are working with IBM to set up a centre of excellence in our institute.

Any valuable advice which you would like to give to the students to have a prosperous career ahead?

"Give a vision to your life and develop opportunities for your growth"

I would like to advise my students to concentrate on their strengths, to develop a good vision and problem solving and critical thinking skills. And don’t wait for opportunities to come your way, work hard and create them.
