Gate is more tougher but in terms of quality of questions being asked in the exam. ESE is more tougher in terms of competition and selection ratio when you have to be in under 50 (railways) for a general category candidates. As far as seats in Engineering Services Examination is concerned, Civil engineering branch leads as always, but that does not mean rest other three branches like mechanical, electrical and E&T people should disheartened.
