Several engineering colleges in India use the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admissions. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two separate examinations. As of 2017, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) as well as 31 National Institute of Technology (NIT) campuses and 25 Indian Institute of Information Technology campuses are part of joint admissions. This is based on the rank in JEE Mains and JEE Advanced achieved by the student. For admission, some institutes rely on scores from the JEE Advanced examination, including the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT). NIT, IISc, IISERs, RGIPT, IIPE and IIST have separate and exclusive counselling sessions, which do not allow students to take the JEE Advanced examination again if they take admission to one of the Indian Institutes of Technology.
