Aerodynamics plays an important role in the engineering phase when an engineer is entrusted with the creation of a new product, such as a winning race car for the next season. During the concept phase, however, aerodynamic processes are not easily quantifiable. The only way for an engineer to refine his designs is usually to perform physical testing on product prototypes. The field of Computational Fluid Dynamics has become a widely used instrument for producing solutions for fluid flows with or without heavy interaction with the growth of computers and ever-growing computational capacity (thanks to Moore's law!).
