Sociology is a natural outgrowth of their everyday understanding of social life. As a student, he or she is related to society in some way, so he or she has a fundamental awareness of it. The optional papers are divided into two sections, each with 250 marks. Candidates will have the opportunity to select an optional subject. Almost 2,000 applicants take sociology as an optional subject in the IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains exam every year.
Those interested in taking this course should first read the NCERT 11 and 12 standard books on sociology. Then, before class, attentively study “Sociology: Concepts and Perspective” by Haralambos and Heald for Paper I and “Modernisation of Indian Custom” by Yogendra Singh for Paper II. The focus should be on conceptual ((particular terms used in a discipline)) clarity while studying. The more the conceptual clarity, the better the understanding and, as a result, the higher the likelihood of scoring well.
