The unique distinction of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is that it is the successor of the first provincial PSC, constituted under British colonial rule in the form of the Madras Service Commission. The Madras Service Commission was established in 1929 under the Madras Legislature Act to employ qualified individuals for provincial and subordinate services. The name was changed to " The Madras Public Service Commission" in 1936.
