The Master's degree program History of Global Markets is devoted to exploring questions of globally integrated markets from a historical perspective. Capital, labor, knowledge: factors of production are increasingly allocated competitively and across national borders. Firms and consumers find themselves interlinked through a growing network of global markets. Where did these developments originate, and how can they be understood? This degree program imparts the analytical skills of economic and social history and combines them with building a profile either in economics, business studies, or the social sciences and history. The focus is on the global economy, business history, and the history of consumption.

The master has European multiple degree options called "Global Markets, Local Creativities" (GLOCAL). Students can choose this option and gain multiple degree diplomas/parchments - one from each Consortium partner - or study the master's degree program History of Global Markets completely in Göttingen and complete it with a Master of Arts degree.

The semester fees comprise administration fees, student body fees, and a Student union fee. The summer semester fee totals $476.54 for 2021. While the Winter semester fee totals $470.43 for 2021. So the yearly fee for attending this program is $946.97.


Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • A minimum of six semesters of study culminating in a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent course of study with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in one of the four study programs "Economic and Social History", "Contemporary History", "Economics", "Business Administration", "Sociology" or "Political Science" or a closely related subject.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 150 of the 180 ECTS credits at the time of application. Applications that do not meet this requirement are not considered.
  • Completed 60 ECTS credits and course work in Economic and Social History, Contemporary History, Business Administration, Economics, Sociology or Political Science including 30 ECTS credits in History of Companies, History of Industrialization, History of Globalization, History of Consumerism, Economic and Social- or General History of the 19th and 20th centuries, Contemporary Concepts and Methods of History, History of Economic Thought, Organizational Theory and Management, Institutional Economics, Evolutionary Economics, International Trade Theory, Development Economics, Economic Policy, Economic Activity, and Growth Theory, Price and Market Theory, Quantitative Methods, Economic Sociology, Economic Migration, Cultural Sciences, Political Economics, or Globalization Studies. A minimum of 18 ECTS credits from these modules must be from coursework that is of intermediate or advanced levels.

Indian Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students can study the Master's degree program in History of Global Markets either completely in German or completely in English. A combination of modules of both languages is also possible.
  • If German is not your native language, you will need to submit proof of your German language skills (for a list of accepted documents, see: "Required application documents").
  • Applicants whose mother tongue is English or who can submit proof of sufficient English language skills do not have to submit proof of German language skills. Language proficiency certificates must be presented at the moment of application and successful completion of the tests may not be older than three years at the moment of application.

International students hailing from non-English speaking countries can prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
