Ques. What is the integrated MSc in chemistry at IIT Kharagpur?

● Top Answer By Senjuti Gupta on 23 Mar 23

Ans. M.Sc Chemistry at IIT Kharagpur is a five-year integrated MSc course offered by the Department of chemistry.  In the first year, all the courses will be the same for all the departments. Out of these courses, only one is chemistry. Other courses are from other departments like Electrical, computer science, Mechanical, Physics, etc. Here, you are given a chance to explore at least one course from most of the departments. Based on your performance in first year (i.e CGPA) you can change your department (also called Depc). But for this, you need to get a CGPA of more than the cut-off CGPA of the department to which you want to change.  For instance suppose, Electrical Engineering department has a cut-off CGPA of 9.2 for DepC then you need to get a CGPA of more than 9.2 for DepC to Electrical.  From the second year most of the courses will be from your department. Though, there will be a few courses from other departments as well. So, yes you will be studying mostly Chemistry from the second year onward. you can look at the complete Curricula Subjects List hereRead more

Ques. Which of these is better in IIT Kanpur: BSC in Chemistry/Physics, Earth Science, Biological Science or Engineering?

● Top Answer By Gaurav Goplani on 24 Apr 23

Ans. It depends on what you are interested in and what career you want to pursue. My personal suggestion would be to make IIT Delhi your first preference. First, if you are a civil services aspirant, get admission into IIT Delhi in any branch and prepare for UPSC through the various coaching institutes available. If you are somehow not able to make it into IIT Delhi, then invest another year preparing for JEE and aim for a higher rank. Once you are able to make it into IIT Kanpur, again you need to work hard for one year to get a branch change into Civil. You will be competing with geniuses from CS and ME but keep yourself motivated. A CPI of 7+ will make it possible to get a branch change. Attend your classes regularly, complete your assignments on time and you are good to go. Lastly, if you are unable to change your branch, go for pure sciences like Physics, Chemistry, BSBE, or Earth Science. Out of these Physics and chemistry have a heavy workload and it will be tough to cope with your batchmates. BSBE has pathetic placements. Another option is Earth Sciences which in my opinion is the best considering the light workload and job opportunities. The average CPI is lesser than other branches and most of its courses overlap with Civil Engineering. Basically, Earth Sciences is equivalent to Civil Engineering just without the Engineering element.Read more

Ques. Which one is the best for a BSc in chemistry (hons) amongst: St. Xavier's, Presidency and Jadavpur University?

● Top Answer By Aditi Banerjee on 15 May 23

Ans. The best choice for a BSc in Chemistry in my opinion would be Jadavpur University. This is one of the best universities in Kolkata second only to IISER in terms of quality of education offered. The chemistry department of JU specifically is the best among other science departments. It has the most learned and experienced faculty pool of around 36 full-time qualified professors. Its infrastructure is better than most colleges in Kolkata. There is a downside to JU considering its high involvement in politics. However, individually you can refrain from being involved, which won’t affect your academics much. Nevertheless, as a science student, you will hardly get time to involve yourself in anything non-academic like politics.  St Xaviers College too is a decent choice followed by Presidency University. Next comes St Xavier's College. And then Presidency University.  While the general preference order would be JU>St Xaviers>Presidency University, the final decision will depend on your personal goals and inclinations.Read more

Ques. How good is Khalsa College Amritsar for a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry?

● Top Answer By Debanjan Nag on 28 Dec 21

Ans. Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology (KCET) is located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. According to the reviews online, Khalsa College is really good when it comes to overall campus atmosphere, practicals and inter college activities. It was the first one to offer a B.Sc. course in Punjab. But the academics and curriculum is average and needs a lot of improvement. There are only a limited number of the companies visiting the campus every year for all the departments. The faculty and management staff are not very cooperative. The faculty often skips classes and are unable to complete the syllabus. This has led to students opting for self studying rather than regularly attending classes. It is suggested that you look for other options as well, because to succeed ahead you will require better guidance and approach for the course.Read more

Ques. Which is the best university to study UG course in chemistry zoology CU, BU, KU or WBSU?

● Top Answer By Saloni Ray, on 20 Oct 21

Ans. One of my friends studied at Calcutta University, so I might be able to give you some details about it. Calcutta University (CU) is one of the oldest functioning institutions in West Bengal. It is popular among students. In Calcutta, most of the colleges are affiliated with CU. The one thing that every CU student is familiar with is their strict grading system. Scoring even a 60% is very difficult. Some students even think this is a good enough score if you are a student of CU. Nowadays top reputed MNCs also demand at least 60% to be able to sit for placements. Finally, you should keep in mind that other mentioned universities may not be as old and experienced as CU, but they will show a bit of leniency while giving marks. So ultimately the decision is yours, whether you want to study in a reputed university with a strong and reliable alumni network or opt for the easier way out by getting admission to newer institutions.Read more

Ques. Which is better for a B.Sc (hons.) in chemistry, St. Stephens College or Hindu College? Please answer with reference to fee structures and teacher

● Top Answer By Ritik Bose on 14 Aug 20

Ans. Below given table shows a comparison between the two of the best colleges under Delhi University to pursue B. Sc (Hons.) in Chemistry. ST. STEPHENS HINDU NIRF RANKING #1 #3 TOTAL FEES (APPROX.) 1.2 LACS 55K ACCREDITED NAAC ‘A’ GRADE NAAC ‘A+’ GRADE Academics: According to previous year, the cut off for admission to Hindu college for B. Sc (hons.) in Chemistry was 96.66% and in St. Stephen's it was 92%. The faculty contingency in both the colleges is very well reputed, dedicated and felicitated having won many recognitions to their name. It is not justified to distinguish between the teachers as all are almost at par with academic qualifications, achievements but are restricted by curriculum and different teaching patterns. Both the colleges organize national conferences and workshops for the holistic development of the students and to gain industry exposure. Placement Opportunities: The key feature which sets Stephen's apart is that when it comes to applying abroad for higher studies or internships or fellowship programmes, a lot of graduates have had the opportunity to do so owing to the scholarships and collaborations with foreign universities like Oxford, Yale and Cambridge. It has a more disciplined and rigorous and calm aura about itself not being as actively a part of the very famous DU fests as compared to other colleges. There are many ongoing research projects funded by SERB and UGC. Top recruiters being Hetero drugs, Emami, Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education, BCG etc. offering a median salary of around 9LPA. In the Hindu college, the median salary package for B. Sc in Chemistry at offer was 5LPA and average placement rate was low as most of the graduates sought to opt for higher studies. The top recruiters were DE Shaw, KPMG, IndiaBulls amongst others. Organizations like Empower India, Philip Morris International, Outlook rolled out internship opportunities too.Read more

Ques. Which is better for a B.Sc in Chemistry (Hons.), St. Xavier's Kolkata or Jadavpur University?

● Top Answer By Ipsha Sharma on 22 Feb 21

Ans. The general preference is that none of the two colleges is a feasible option for pursuing B.Sc (Chemistry). The reasons behind this are listed separately below for both the colleges: Xavier’s is not a good option for chemistry. The faculty is not equipped in teaching in-depth concepts. They do not provide the requisite exposure for broadening a student's knowledge base. A general tendency of faculties is that they don’t recommend books. A huge amount of knowledge is gained by using internet sources which in turn makes them dependent on electronic sources. Internal politics is also an inevitable element of the campus culture. A lot of distraction is inherent in the day-to-day activities. Jadavpur University also gives very less exposure in terms of the knowledge base. A large amount of attention is focused on internal politics which hampers the educational and professional growth of the candidates. Both the colleges reflect quite a dismal picture for this particular course, but even if the choice has to be made it will shift towards Xavier’s Kolkata as in: It is the only NAAC Accredited A++ institute in West Bengal making your degree more reputed and acceptable. It will provide larger scope for better career options in the market. It allows individuals to look out to different personality domains of a candidate as it gives opportunity in the form of various cultural & social events. Overall, Xavier’s is a better option than Jadavpur University in every aspect.Read more
