Sarah Review at Northern College At Pures, Toronto | Collegedunia

The Northern Experience

S
3.2 /10

I knew about this college because it is in my hometown. The application process was very simple, you just go on the Ontario colleges website, pay and pick your school and program. I got accepted the next day because I already had my transcript from highschool. I've always been a straight A student and continue to be that student in this college.

Course Curriculum :

I think the classes taught are fine but I find their are way to many classes that are similar to each other and too much workload that is similar.

Exams :

I chose this program in order to get a few years of college before I go to university. I also chose it because of the several different path ways the program had to offer after graduation. The minimum grade to pass this course is a 60%. I have taken many courses including social work practice, crisis intervention, problem-solving and mediation, abnormal psych, developmental psych, promoting community change, indigenous history, Law, etc. I have never had a class of a test under 75%

Placement :

Many courses have placements during their semesters, including mine. There is no pay associated with these placements they are for grades. Placements are offered through agency's that agree to take on college students.

Internship :

Yes the college offers many jobs at the pub, library, gym and bookstore. I am currently an employee of the pub and since the school refuses to let us open during the week I have a max of 8 hours a week. For the other jobs most are a max of 15-20 hours a week.

Events :

There are not many events out on at the college. Most of them are directed towards the international student festivals like Diwali and holi. There has been Christmas dances in the past but that's about it.

Fees :

The standard tuition of a domestic student is about $6,000. For international scholarships I don't really have any information. I won a scholarship last year that was awarded to about 50 domestic students, I'm not sure what it was called but the amount was $500. The school recently put on a haunted trail in order to raise money for more scholarship.

Scholarship :

The school would like to know your expenses, and would like you to express why you need financial aid.

Examination Structure :

This year has been a huge change, we have a midterm week full of tests and also a finals week full of tests. All places in the gym to prevent academic dishonesty.

Faculty :

Most of my faculty have masters degree, and most teach fairly well. I will say the college does not teach first time teachers anything before they come into a classroom.

Hostel :

Since I go to school in my hometown, I opted to stay in my childhood home in order to save money. The cafeteria is extremely expensive at the school and many student go to other food places around the school.
